In the Past 4 Days...
Feb. 21st, 2005 01:41 pmMy weekends don't usually consist of go-go dancing, Chinese dragons, masses of stormtroopers, demon movies and a hero dying. But this wasn't a typical weekend...
Friday: Tried in vain to get a cab to run over to
ioerror's going away party in time. Paged
almostgold trying to let her know that I wasn't gonna be able to make it so she could let Jake know I wasn't being a flake. Never found said cab. Ended up running into my pals Ingrid and Erin and we headed over to Fallout at Rickshaw. They stayed for a drink and left to hang in a smoke-friendly bar, and I stayed to dance the night away with pals
skip,
itsolivia,
simulacrum,
earlyprose and
t_a_c_k!
I sweated like crazy as I jumped up and down like a fool...and of course, the great DJ Mason played a song I used to go-go dance to with UZI, so I was showing off and I think I hurt my knee again. Freakin' old age! Afterwards, some of us headed over to Sparky's for a 3am meal. I don't remember much, except almost ditching the ladies to follow a cute boy home. But then I realized that's not a very classy way to meet your next boyfriend, so I stayed with the girls.
Saturday: Got up late with a pounding headache and sore limbs, and grabbed a cab to Meteron for lunch with some pals. When I got there waiting for the rest of the gang to show up, performers for the Chinese New Year parade came through with dragons and drums. (Perfect for a hangover). Luckily I ended up heading to the bar for lunch with Mary Franklin,
tdhartist, illustrator Randy Martinez, Pete, Kevin, Pabs and
chefgrrl. I started off the day with a much-needed G&T and brunch.
We then all headed off in the pouring rain to Moscone Center for the comic book convention Wondercon. Amongst the comic geeks, we ran into
ramblingretard and
atomicgeek -- who kept me company as I waited for the stormtroopers to get ready for a group shot, and also helped me to avoid running into any stalkers. ;-)
After taking tons of photos of stormtroopers and such for starwars.com, I managed to break away for a bit with
ramblingretard and
atomicgeek to catch the Harvey Pekar panel. He was his usual snarky self, and he made me laugh over and over. He's promoting his next graphic novel called The Quitter which reveals memories of his childhood when he was believe it or not -- a bit of a street fighter. He even threatened to put an old photo of him as a kid flexing for the back jacket cover! I can't wait to see that.
I then caught up with Kevin to wander around. I said hello to artist Dave Stevens and we chatted about the two new Bettie Page movies that are in the works, and then I ran into
ioerror who was taking photos of all the fans in costume. I apologized about not making it to his going away party, but he seemed distracted by the guy in the Spawn monster outfit walking passed, so I let it go. ;-)
Kevin and I then crashed the Batman Returns panel to listen to Christian Bale chat about riding around in the Batmobile and such. Then our Star Wars presentation was on. I pretty much have that thing memorized...I can't wait until we can start showing fans new stuff!
After we met up again and figured that staying for the Star Wars costume contest and fan film show, we all headed back over to Meteron to see Constantine.
Now I'm not excited about films often (except for Garden State and Napoleon) but I was anxious to see this. Granted, I know Keanu Reeves gets a lot of crap for his acting skills, but I thought he was perfect to play this role. If you've ever read the comic Hellblazer you already know that Constantine isn't a very emotional guy -- he's stoic, deadpan and void of drama -- just like Keanu. And I was happy to see that the producers didn't load up the film with well-known actors. It had a lot of second tier people I'd seen in "Touching Evil" as well as non-blockbuster movies. It was believable, and funny in the right places. I loved it. And it inspired me to keep writing my novel which touches on a couple of the same characters. I highly recommend it to folks. But if you already hate Keanu, don't go. You just have too much baggage to appreciate it.
Following the film, we all went to Chevy's for drinks and dinner and more conversation. Kevin was nice enough to drop me home.
Sunday: Got up late again, headed over to Cole Valley to run some errands and ate at Crepes on Cole while reading the latest issue of Juxtapoz. Since my usual coffeehouse where I write on weekends was full, I headed to the Haight to check out new stuff at the Giant Robot 2 store and Kid Robot. I ended up buying a Jawa Kubrick for my desk at work, and wandered back home. Came upon the "Project Runway" marathon on the telly, and half-watched it as I wrote in my journal. Went to bed watching bad telly and listening to the rain hit the roof of my apartment.
Monday: Writing, working on magazine pitches, organizing files for taxes, surfing LJ and missing Hunter S. Thompson.
