AOL no longer whipping the llama's ass...
Nov. 10th, 2004 04:28 pmLast of original Winamp/Nullsoft team departs:
A sad bit of geek history today: the last members of the original team behind Winamp have departed AOL. Nullsoft would appear to be no more. The once-ubiquitous digital audio player --which did indeed whip the llama's ass -- now appears destined for decline.

Right after AOL had bought Nullsoft, I came in as the Senior Editor for Winamp.com for what felt like an all-too-short time period. I had the feeling I was brought in to "keep the boys in line" which pretty much either marked as a den mother from one side (the AOL corporate) or a bossy manager (Nullsoft side). So I pretty much wised up and let the fellas do what they did best -- their jobs.
The team constantly took the piss out of AOL with themed months on the site like Ninja Month, Prom Month, and the infamous Naked Month. We usually used the news section to make fun of our coworkers and rave about the EFF. But that's one of the things that made Winamp.com so great -- we had fun. I think the median age of the group was 23 and they kept the AOL corporate dorks on their toes to say the least. It was inspiring to be around people who cared so much for their audience base.
I respected Justin and the gang endlessly for their passion behind Winamp. And I'm glad I was on their team -- even for a little while. Even when I broke my foot falling down the Nullsoft staircase, I was still a team member worth mocking.
I hope now that they've all escaped AOL, they can get back to creating new cool music gadgets for us to play with again.
Long live the llama!
