Some weekends I do nothing but stay in my flannel PJs, work on my book and watch IFC as I eat mac 'n cheese. I'm not normally a social creature. But this weekend thanks partly to my old college roomie (Kim) visiting from Boulder, and bands playing that I really wanted to catch -- I was in bars for most of the weekend.
---------------------------
Thursday -- I went to Popscene for the first time ever. I've lived in San Francisco since 1996, and I've never made an appearance to this place until Kim said there was a band playing there she and her pals wanted to see. I wasn't even close to prepared for the experience. I knew already that the place is infamous for being a trendy Britpop hangout, but what I didn't expect was the oodles of underage Britpop Vespa-wannabe kids. Man, did I feel ancient! It was great to hang out with my pal Kim, but the "must-be-seen-to-feel-worthy" audience and the LA band that talked/looked like surfers but sounded like Pulp made me twitchy. I dunno, but bands that fake British accents make me mad. Like when Madonna, pretended all of a sudden that she always had that Brit accent.
Not cool.
Friday -- Showed up early to
Café du Nord to catch
Every Move a Picture. Watched Brett dance like Molly Ringwald in his argyle sweater as he sang
"Signs of Life." Managed to
attempt to hit on their guitarist Alan (does buying a beer count as flirting?) before I discovered he was married… ugh. Hung out with my pals I hadn't seen in awhile as they came to see the other hipster bands -- On the Speakers and Parchment Farm. Went over to Latin American Club for a nightcap and to check out Adam's work as suggested by
itsolivia. Had a late-night quesadilla and flopped into bed around 4am.
Saturday -- Went out to dinner with Kim at Last Supper Club, took her on a brief Mission bar crawl to meet some pals, and then went to
Thee Parkside thinking I was going to have my friend see
Kelly Stoltz play, only to find out at midnight and 2 lame bands later that he wasn't showing. Headed over to the Latin to see Kelly Stoltz working the door. Nice one. Went over to Doc's for Bennet's birthday where I proceeded to drink tequila and play with Ben's dog. Bed around 3am.
Sunday -- I've been a huge fan of
Viva Voce since I first stumbled upon them on MP3.com a couple of years ago. I used to play them on my now-defunct online radio station -- Grrl Radio.
I also reviewed their first EP on Grrl.com. Viva Voce consists of only two people -- a husband and wife team (Kevin & Anita Robinson) –- who are a marvel to behold on stage. Anita plays both electric and acoustic guitar and bass...and steel guitar, while Kevin will plays drums, keyboards and kazoo! It's surprisingly a big sound for just the two of them. So I called
lundergaard and my pal Kirsten to join me at
12 Galaxies to see them perform, only to discover that the opening band --
Thee More Shallows -- was a band Andy used to play in. Go figure.
David handed me a CR5 of their latest work and I've been listening to Thee More Shallows all day. Good stuff, especially if you dig Grandaddy. Met Kevin and Anita of Viva Voce for the first time face to face and bought up some more of their CDs and a tee. They're super nice, so if Viva Voca come to your town, be sure to go see them!
