Former 'N Sync singer Joey Fatone recently impressed judges and fans alike with his unique Star Wars tango on "Dancing With the Stars." With a few helpful hints from R2-D2 at rehearsals, and costumes that would fit right in at Jabba's palace, Fatone's love for the saga was apparent in every dance move.

"I was told to submit songs prior to the show to see if they could get clearance, so I tried to think of fun things to theme the dances after," Fatone explains. "The bizarre thing was that every time I was trying to think of an idea, I would come up with more movie themes that could fit with a tango. I was thinking of the cantina song, the traditional Star Wars theme and threw in the Meco disco version of Star Wars. I just wanted to choose something that was completely out of the ordinary and the funny thing was that the show producers loved the idea!"

However, not everyone was convinced dancing by way of the Force was such a great idea. "My dance partner Kim was freaking out because how can you do the tango to Star Wars?" Fatone says. "But it ended up being great because she actually put a lot of thought into the routine, even though she says she's never seen Star Wars in her life. I tried to explain to her in an hour exactly what happens in the movies. And it was so confusing to her who was who. 'No, that's not Luke, that's Anakin. Luke and Leia were actually brother and sister. Darth Vader who was once Anakin is Luke's father.' And so on."

Once the music and the theme were finally decided, Fatone and his dance partner had to decide on the perfect costumes for the performance. "Everyone was wondering if Kim was going to wear the Leia hair buns, but then I mentioned the Slave Leia outfit. The wardrobe designers tried to incorporate that look with the tango costume without being too gimmicky. For my costume, I asked for a kind of Jedi robe or cloak, and it evolved from there. I also brought in my lightsaber to possibly use in the beginning and end of the routine, so it would be true to a Jedi character and have fun with it and still not be hokey. At one point I had put in my Padawan braid and my partner was saying no. But I said, 'It's a Jedi thing, you wouldn't understand.'"

While viewers got to see rehearsal footage of Fatone and his partner dancing under the watchful eye of R2-D2, there were plenty of ideas that Fatone didn't get to try out for the segment. "We had R2-D2 in the practice, but I thought it would be fun to have stormtroopers from the 501st Legion to come in and sit in the audience during the actual performance, but that's where the show drew the line. They thought it might imply they were too much in favor for me. But I said, 'No, they'd be guests in the audience!' It didn't work; though I did try my best Jedi mind trick by moving my hand across the screen when they showed our number, and said, 'You will vote for me.'"

Even though the routine went off without a hitch, and the crowd loved the performance, Fatone admits that initially he was anxious about what other Star Wars fans might think. "I was a little bit nervous doing the Star Wars routine because you have those die-hard fans that are very picky about who has fun with something that has to do with the films. So I was a little hesitant to really do it."
